Endorsement Process Information For Candidates

Resolutions

We vote to support ballot measures by passing a resolution of support for each ballot measure through our Issues Committee.

Candidates and resolutions require our general membership to vote to support the endorsement of any and every ballot measure or candidate.

Members

The First District Democrats evaluate and endorse candidates using a committee approach: the Elections Committee evaluates candidates and presents their endorsement recommendations to the general membership; our members then vote on all candidate endorsements.

Why do we have an Elections Committee? Why doesn’t the entire membership just meet and hear from every candidate for every office?

Our Committee structure streamlines the endorsement process, is fair and transparent to candidates and members, and balances our members’ enthusiasm with their available time.

First Legislative District

As the local Democratic Party organization for the First Legislative District we represent a complex area. In addition to statewide elections, our voters elect representatives in:

  • Two Counties (King and Snohomish), including all County-wide offices and also County Councilmembers in King County Districts 1 and 3, and Snohomish County Districts 3, 4, and 5
  • Three Congressional Districts (portions of the 1st, 7th, and 8th CDs)
  • The entirety of the cities of Bothell, Brier, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Woodinville, and a portion of Kirkland (each city elects seven councilmembers; Brier also elects a separate mayor)
  • The Port of Seattle
  • Two Conservation Districts (King and Snohomish), each with three elected Directors
  • Four District Courts (Northeast and Shoreline District Courts in King County and Evergreen and South District Courts in Snohomish County)
  • Four Fire Districts (King County Fire District 16, Woodinville Fire & Rescue, Snohomish County Fire District 10, and Snohomish County Regional Fire Authority District 1)
  • Three Public Hospital Districts (King County Public Hospital District No. 2 and Snohomish County Hospital Districts 1 and 2)
  • Six School Districts (Edmonds, Everett, Monroe, Northshore, Lake Washington, and Shoreline)
  • Six Utility, Water, and Wastewater Districts (Alderwood Water and Wastewater, Cross Valley Water, Lake Forest Park Water, North City Water, Woodinville Water, Northshore Utility District, Snohomish County Public Utility District No. 1)

Our communities also vote on ballot measures and levies in each of these jurisdictions, including levies that support our municipalities, the King County library system, Sound Transit, and Snohomish County Community Transit.
